Artist Review of R&F Pigment Stick in Olive Yellow III

R&F Pigment Sticks are highly pigmented bars of oil colour, handcrafted in small batches with the purest traditional paintmaking ingredients. The stick format allows artists to paint directly onto the canvas without a brush, making them versatile, easy to transport, and perfect for expressive mark-making. In this article, Sheila Dodd shares her excitement about the portability and the vibrancy of colour of the R&F Pigment Stick in Olive Yellow III, and how this format of oil paint gives her the freedom to easily travel with her paints.     Artist Review of R&F Pigment Stick in Olive Yellow III by Sheila Dodd As a painter, excited to travel to the foothills of Mont Ventoux with an international group of plein air painters, one of my first thoughts was which oil painting materials would be safe and compact enough to capture the sunlit landscapes and still lifes in the markets of Provence. Just as important was making sure everything could fit safely into my cabin baggage, especially after having expensive pigments confiscated on previous trips through airport security! Jackson’s website stocks the relatively new (to me anyway) R&F Pigment Sticks. Olive Yellow III looked like sunshine in a stick! It has …

Artist Review of the Stillman & Birn Zeta Softcover Sketchbook

Stillman & Birn Zeta Softcover Sketchbooks are praised for their thoughtful design and quality manufacturing, making them a popular choice for artists and illustrators alike. In this article, Amy Sharp shares her love for the smooth and durable paper surface of the Zeta Sketchbooks, and their exceptional handling qualities, adding comfort and ease to her drawing practice.     Artist Review of the Stillman & Birn Zeta Softcover Sketchbook by Amy Sharp This is my absolute favourite sketchbook, one of the few that I’ve managed to fill from cover to cover, and I’m currently on my third one! One of the biggest reasons for this is the paper. I’ve tried several other sketchbooks with ‘smooth’ paper, often finding the paper to feel thin and cheap, with a strangely slippery quality. Stillman & Birn’s Zeta Softcover Sketchbook balances the smooth surface with thick, high quality paper, creating a much better drawing experience.     This allows pencils to glide across the surface, but with enough tooth to allow controlled and detailed lines. In addition to this, the paper is sturdy enough to withstand vigorous erasing; this is a very important quality for me as I constantly revisit and edit ideas.   …

Artist Review of the Golden Open Slow Drying Acrylic Paint

Golden Open Slow Drying acrylic paints are high quality acrylics with an extended working time that allows artists more time to work before the paint dries. Ideal for blending techniques, glazing techniques, fine detail, and more. In this Artist Review of the Month, Fay Howe shares how the paints are perfect for using in her mono printing practice.     Artist Review of the Golden Open Slow Drying Acrylic Paint by Fay Howe I first started painting using acrylic paints because I found them easier to use than watercolours, which I sadly never managed to master. I continued with acrylics for years, but eventually was frustrated by the speed with which they dried and the difficulty of blending with them. So I changed to oil painting, which resolved those difficulties, and then rarely returned to using acrylic paint.     However, last year, I took an online printing course in which the recommendation was to use Golden Open acrylics. For that course, I was only using two forms of black, Carbon Black and Bone Black, the latter of which is more transparent, and a couple of other neutral colours. Prior to that, when using acrylics, I used heavy body or …
